Kevin Lings, economist and author of The Missing Piece: Solving South Africa’s Economic Puzzle, spoke to Shannon de Ryhove about his book.
Lings says his book argues that there are four critical puzzle pieces that are needed to get South Africa’s economy functioning properly. Since 1994, he says, the country has managed to fit three of them into the right place, but the fourth is missing.
The puzzle pieces Lings identifies are internationalising the economy, getting government finances under control, addressing socio-economic issues and, finally, supporting business. He says that the country has done relatively well in the first three, but business needs support.
