Mandla Langa was interviewed by Ayanda-Allie Paine on Morning Live about his new book The Texture of Shadows.
Langa says that in between this book and his previous one, The Lost Colours of the Chameleon, he spent a good deal of time exploring South African history and the nation’s development.
“1989 where this things starts is a year that was very difficult for the liberation movement,” Langa says. “There was the closure of many institutions, the so-called Soviet Block was coming to an end and the Berlin Wall fell. The liberation movement had to start and think very clearly how to move forward. It’s a story of guerrillas from MK although I call it People’s Army, because I do not want at the end of the day to be sued by MK!”
When asked to comment on South Africa’s lack of reading culture, Langa says “South Africa is a place of stories” and that writers just need to engage in reality if they want to relate to readers.
